You're answering your own questions aren't you?

So far:

You sort of said IBM makes the best PC laptops. I happen to agree with
this. I wouldn't buy anything else.

You made the obvious statement that iBooks are more cost friendly than
PowerBooks.

What's left?

Which OS? It's a question answered with a question: what software?
This is really only a question if all the titles are available on both
platforms. If the software you want to run is available on both PC
and Mac, the next question is how much money will you lose switching
from PC to Mac software. If you're still on the fence, OSX is the
way to go.

Which OSX ready machine? It's a question answered with a question.
What do you want to do with it? Short of video editting-esque tasks,
I'd say an iBook G4 is more than enough. 1GB is a good target size
for memory.

By the way, I'm of the rare opinion that the iLife suite sucks.
iMovie is complete junk. iDVD annoyingly makes your movie into
an Apple ad. Garage Band is a time sinkhole. 99% of the
user base refuses to admit clueless air guitar wannabe syndrome.
iTunes is alright. What's left? I can't remember. It must be
forgettable. :)

Take the cost of software seriously in other words. There are
plenty of good titles for OSX but they cost money.
