Unix is... not the world's most friendly operating system, but it's not
that bad. I set up a Red Hat Enterprise 3 system a few weeks ago; I
compiled, installed and configured Apache, FastCGI, Ruby (and Rails),
PHP, MySQL, and some other stuff in around four hours.
A similar setup on OS X would be a lot quicker, because user-friendly
install packages are available for a lot of those things, and in some
cases (like for MySQL) there are nice GUI front-ends. But really, it's
not that hard on typical *nix systems, if you just understand a few
things about how *nix finds libraries during the compile process.
Of course, I've done similar setups previously. That's the thing about
*nix systems. They're not very discoverable -- if you don't know what
you're doing, it will take you a very long time to get anything done.
Fortunately, the next time you have to do the same thing, you'll know
what you're doing.
