We're talking about IT departments with a very large base of networked
computers, not home users or gurus with one computer to maintain.

IT departments, at least the ones I've worked with, do not auto-update
without testing and being sure it won't affect the integrity of their
systems and their networked environment. Some do not use auto-update
at all, preferring their own system of applying patches.

Of course that one week window applies only if you knew the virus was
coming. If they had any critical projects due during that time frame
it's understandable why they may want to put it off for a while.

On my one computer, this OS X machine, I don't apply patches until I've
had time to read the details on Apple's site (are they something I
need?) and have read any problem reports that might affect me. With
windows you don't have that luxury...it's patch and pray ASAP.
