My 85 year old uncle would love to own one - so he could burn it!
His old win98 Dell system died several weeks ago (Hard Drive) and so he bought a
new Dell as a replacement.
It arrived last week and I sat and watched him go through the set up procedure
last Thursday (7/28). Everything went fine, he connected to the internet,
restored his backed up Money data, printed out several NY Times cross word
puzzles for his wife, and read and replied to several email that had been
waiting.
On Friday he called me - the system wouldn't print. I walked him through a
couple of checks, everything seemed to be set right, then had him try printing
another puzzle. That worked BUT printing from MS Works wouldn't. I suggested he
call Dell.
He spent 2 plus hours on the phone with Dell (mostly on hold!) before they threw
up their arms and said it was an MS problem.
He spent over an hour on the phone with MS and they said it was a virus - pay us
and we'll fix it (at least that was what he told me). When he finished with MS,
the system wouldn't even boot!
I returned on Saturday to try and reinstall the OS and get him running. Funny
thing was however, Dell only included a piece of cardboard telling you that,
should you need to reinstall the OS, log onto some web site at Dell (IIRC) and
it will get done. How one does that when the system will not even boot is a
question I asked tech support when I finally talked with them.
They ended up sending a CD which arrived on Tuesday. Today, I started installing
the OS. After pressing F12, I selected IDE CD Rom for the boot device and the
first several times I tried, the system merely started to look at the CD,
changed a couple of screens then froze.
Tech support was called again and we finally got to the screen with 3 options -
repair, reinstall, quit and the keyboard wouldn't work!
As my uncle lives in a retirement facility, we had to let tech support go so he
could go and eat lunch. They were to call back after 1:30 this afternoon.
When I returned form lunch, I continued trying what the tech support person had
told me to do. 8-10 tries later the leyboard finally worked and I got the OS
re-installed.
Went through al the set up screens, activated nortons, updated it and the OS,
then set up his email. Then tried to set up his printer.
I installed the driver off the CD my uncle had. Tried it but had no luck so
logged onto the web and downloaded the current XP driver and installed that.
The OS (XP Home) said the printer was fine BUT no program could find it or print.
After looking around for a bit I decided to shut the system down and let it sit
for a few minutes, then try again.
I rebooted - and it popped up into the screen offering me Safe mode and several
other options. All of which failed to boot! Back to square one!
When I left at 3:30 this afternoon, my uncle was on hold waiting for tech
support. It seems he had paid for on-site service and he was going to either get
them to come fix his GD dell or he would be shipping it back to them, perhaps in
little pieces. At 85, he doesn't get mad that often but boy was he pissed today.
