Ended up downloading soundtap which seems to do the job OK

Think of it as you have two sound cards now. You really don't, but you
do have two sound card drivers. And Windows and LP Recorder should see
two different sound cards. So make sure LP Recorder / Windows is using
the Stereo Mix Plus driver and not the original driver.

If this isn't the problem, it might be a hardware limitation. Which
wouldn't surprise me due to all of this content-protection stuff going
on. If this is the case, there are tricks around this too.

You have to configure 'Stereo Mix' yourself.
