I recently had an XP installation on a compaq R3000 screw up, a
config file missing or corrupt causing the machine to fail to
start
up except in safe mode. After following various instructions
gleaned
from the net it now fails to even do that. I took the hard disk
out
and installed it in a USB external hard disk case and plugged it
into my netbook thinking that I would at least be able to retrieve
some photos etc.
However, the Advent netbook doesnt even "see" that anything is
plugged in to the USB port (any of the 3 ports). Nothing shows up
in
Disk Manager either other than its own hard disk. USB pen drives
etc
are instantly recognised. Am I wrong in my assumption that an
external hard disk drive should also be recognised? On Microsofts
website there is some stuff about editing the registry, something
I
am reluctant to do as I dont want to screw up the netbook also.
Would a powered external drive case behave in the same way?
Anybody
else any experience of using an external hard disk on a netbook?
Besides what Barry and Bob has already said Roy, here is what I
would
do.
Check to make sure it shows up in the Device Manager (listed under
Disk Drives). If it does, this is good. Next right click on My
Computer and select Manage. Then select Disk Management and assign
a
drive letter. Now all should be fine.
Besides what Barry, Bob and Bill have already said, if the HDD had a
password set when it was in the Compaq then you won't see it in a
USB enclosure no matter what you do. (Been there, done that.)

itself did not have a password set but there was one set within the XP
installation on the disk. I cant remember how I formatted the drive
for the original installation but I was using XP under Ubuntu Linux
loader. By trying the jumper on the HDD in various positions I found
that in the cable select mode the drive is at least detected and spins
up red LED on the USB caddy when first plugged in, changes to green
after a short time. Windows finds the drive and attempts to install
it. Then appears an error message saying it might not work correctly.
No sign of it in management at all. Tried microsofts on-line "fix it"
utility without any success. My next idea is to install Linux on
another machine and see if that can recognise the external drive.
