So people are still buying them [Palm IIIc PDAs] even
though they are 10 years old now.
Which is surprising to me since the Palm IIIc loses it's memory
with a dead battery,
Battery only goes dead once every 5 years so far.
I recently had the battery go dead overnight on my Palm TX because of
a software glitch. I recharged, removed the offending software, reset
the device, and went on. Nothing was lost because the TX has
non-volatile memory.
I only lost the data once in my Palm IIIc when the first battery died.
But it was synced to my laptop, so no big loss. I did buy a Palm IIIxe
as a backup and it worked with a GPS that hooked up with it (the Palm
IIIc was too long to snap on to the GPS). The xe uses AAA batteries and
that was dying all of the time on me. Although I didn't use it enough to
keep up with the battery changes or charges using rechargeables.
can't be seen in direct sunlight,
That is what shade is for.
Unfortunately there's no shade at my grandkids baseball games.
Fortunately I can read my books on the TX in direct sunlight when he's
not playing (and get away with it... ;)
Got me there. <wink>
has a low resolution screen,
160x160 with 256 colors. Which is still GIF quality.
Yea but 320 x 480 with jillions of colors is so much better for
reading books and web pages. Having Landscape capability is nice too.
So are netbooks with much larger screens. <grin>
has poor battery life,
14 days per charge running in standby mode, or 12 hours always
running mode. Laptop and netbook users would kill to this longevity
even 10 years later.
I was surprised at your battery life. I get around 6 hours book
reading time on a charge. Worse of course when web surfing with the
wireless turned on. (My Palm Z22 which is a modern IIIc gets your
battery life.)
My Epson PX-8 (from 1984) which is almost the same size as a netbook
(weighs 6 pounds though) and runs for 12 hours straight too and 60 days
in standby. Not much good for anything besides working with text files
today. Does has a 300 baud modem though. Still know of any BBS around?
lol
runs a slow processor,
Which runs ice cold. No heatsink or fan required.
I never saw any Palm with a fan. That would be quite a sight. But a
fast processor is needed for good video. And the processor in the TX
is variable speed, slow for better battery life when reading, fast for
good video.
Well I wouldn't know much about newer PDAs than the IIIc, so I just
threw the heatsink and fans out there. Videos running under PDAs? What's
that? <wink>
and has a tiny memory.
I only filled it up about 4 times in 10 years. Capturing webpages for
offline viewing through AvantGo (AGPalmClient4.2). So if it had 1TB
of space, what real difference would have it made?
Well the TX has over a 100M of internal memory compared to your 8M.
But that's really moot with the 4 Gig SD card (sorry you have no SD
card capability) I have plugged in in which I carry my whole ebook
library plus 30 hours of music (oh wait your IIIc can't play music). I
can sync wirelessly (oops you have no Bluetooth) and surf (what you
have no WiFi?) at the nearest hotspot.
I do have a modem attachment for it. It uses its own AAA batteries and
you only have 4 hours of online time and the batteries are dead. Yeah...
not anything like WiFi, eh? And the local hotspots don't provide modular
phone jacks either. <sigh>
Ah yes, brings back memories of the bad old days. Definitely
an antique. I suppose those are the people who also buy antique 10
year old laptops... ;)
I got some 10 year old laptops. Want to buy some? <grin>
So I think you will agree that the newer Palms have a few advantages
over the antique Palms. I once had a Palm Pilot Pro, Palm III and
m105. I currently have a m125, Zire 72, Tungsten E, Tungsten E2, Z22
and a TX. If your hangup is Eee PCs then I guess mine is Palms... ;)
<sigh> Yeah I guess so!
