When you decide to move to Windows 7, I would recommend getting
Acronis Backup (or equivalent), back up your important data and
applications, do a fresh install of W7, then restore your data and
applications.
I have and use Acronis for partition backups but moving apps from a backup to a new Win7 installation is not as simple as you make it appear. An installed app has files in different directories, plus registrry entries. Those things are not as easily transplantable as an original app install with the usual installation wizard. Copying over HP-provided special drivers that operate the webcam, touch pad and other special laptop hardware is likely just as or more complex. At least that's how I visualize it.
Applications really are not meant for migration to a new OS, although MSFT should allow you to transfer profile specific application data & settings.
So far laptop drivers have NOT been an issue with W7 in the HP and Dell I tested (all were present and installed).
Keep in mind that MS knows it has to hit it out of the park on this one.
But time will tell.
