This is a failure mode of the CCFL lamp that lights your laptop display. Although the 'CC' in CCFL stands for cold cathode, they in fact operate anything but cold. The failure mode results in one (or occasionally both) cathode(s) running much hotter than they should. This extra heat heats up the immediately adjacent part of the LCD display preventing it from working properly (the black spot). Rubbing the black spot causes the liquid in the display to move about a bit temporarily cooling that part of the display just enough for it to work again (plus your finger takes a small amount of heat away).

The solution is to replace the CCFL lamp but this is usually not as easy as it sounds. It is just possible that a fault in the inverter has caused the problem, but most often it just occurs.
