my 3 months old Toshiba Satellite laptop suddenly has a 'k' key
keyboard problem.

This is a related problem with malfunctioning key....
Recently a friend of mine had a key problem with her new HP laptop,
tablet edition and the peculiarity was that the apostrophe key was
exhibiting abnormal function; what happen was it needs to be pressed
more than twice to make it work properly, therefore she brought it to
the Hp service center which suggested it to be reformatted to correct
the malfunctioning key.
I don't understand why it needs to be reformatted when the key is the
only problem. I would like to ask the opinion from people here if that
was the right thing to do, as the  reformating result was the said
notebook performance had deteriorated, yes the particular key
abnormality was resolved but other problems resulted(e.g,such as
malfunctioning modem  and she had difficulty connecting to the
internet) .By the way,the O/S which was home vista premium ...
When modem properties  was checked , it was said to be working
properly...

Is this one of the peculiarities of Vista that once its reinstalled it
will go haywire in performance instead of sorting out the defect?

TIA
Roy

Well Roy, lots of customer service people will tell the customer to format
and reinstall regardless of the Windows version. IMHO, this is one of the
worst things you can do. Although  they tell people to do this because they
don't have a clue how to fix it the right way. Although most problems, even
clueless people can Google the problem and often find the solution.

Thanks for that reply Bill
There is really something strange with this Vista environment
indeed...a few days after I wrote this thread my friend issue just
resolved by itself and the modem bug just disappeared. I was wondering
if this had something to do with the registry to resolve by itself?
