What you did is potentially dangerous, although for someone who doesn't know what they are doing, the "right" solution might also be dangerous.

The "right" solution, which often needs to be done every 3 to 12 months, is disassembly so that the fan and heatsink can be gotten to directly and fully, and cleaned (with compressed air).

With my laptop OFF, I took her monster vacuum cleaner, disconnected
off the input hose from the floor rotary section at the disconnect
point, and connected the flexible plastic hose to its extension pipe
without attachments. I turned Monster Mash on and sucked the living
you-know-what from the output and input vents of the processor fan
ports. I held it right up to the ports for at least a few minutes for
both input and output ports.

My laptop runs like new, just as if I had pulled it out of the carton
from Best Buy.

My cooling fan used to run all the time before this nuclear cleaning.
Now I can hear the CPU fan shut off at least as often as it did when I
first bought my Gateway.

Amazing? Probably not, but why don't you read about this solution next
to the cooling laptop platforms in your local retailer?
