is to save images of ALL the disk partitions.
Programs like Acronis or Ghost will let you do this from
a bootable CD without installing anything on your system.

That way, when you accidentally blow away the program that
makes the recovery disks, you can recover.

Easier said than done with today's high capacity PCs that would require an even higher capacity external drive. I have a 750 GB USB/Firewire 800 drive on order right now that should arrive next week. Then I can back up several generations of the laptop's HD image. Right now I don't have anything that big to use.
