I've got a hp pavillion 4300, and the keyboard will miss random
keys. For example if I spell a word the first time, it might be
missing the 2nd letter, if I erase it and spell it again it might be
missing the 3rd. It is random on the letter that misses, and random on
a sequence of misses (for example, it isn't every other or every third
etc). I reformatted the computer and purchased a NEW keyboard, but
that didn't solve the problem. Aside from replacing the entire
motherboard (which is EXPENSIVE in laptops), are there any other
things that could be checked? Thanks ahead of time!!!!
Well personally I think you are out of luck and it is possible that a new motherboard might have the same defective chipset as well. My two Toshiba 2595XDVD have such a chipset. As once in awhile they will run in autorepeat instantly. Just one keypress out of hundreds though. Plus the computer will lock up once or twice and if one hits the Fn key, it unlocks. AFAIK, all of them do this.
Although the only thing you didn't try yet that I would try, is to hook up an external keyboard and try that. It probably won't help, although it just might.
Other things I would do in your case is maybe purchasing a used motherboard if you find the price is right and you can handle to repair it yourself. Second thing would be to purchase a new, used or refurbished laptop and get rid of that one.
