First off, I'm a newbie at anything wireless. Been on computers for 10You only need a router. Your desktop will connect directly to the
years and understand a great deal about them. With that said I'll
begin.
I'm trying to speak this aloud and get a response so someone can tell
me if I understand what I will need and what I will not to establish a
wireless connection.
I will be purchasing a laptop in the next few weeks. I am wanting to
be able to use my current cable internet connection with the laptop.
The laptop I plan to get has wireless 802.11b/g already built in.
(That already eliminates the need for a wireless network adapter.)
The only other thing I should need is a laptop and a wireless router.
My current internet connection is through a cable modem provided by
my local ISP. They installed the ethernet card and the modem.
My PC came with a pre-installed ethernet card (not sure why they
didn't use that one)
Anyway, I have two ethernet cards installed in my pc, only one in use.
What confuses me:
How will my current desktop pc connect to the internet? Will it be
considered a wireless connection as well? Will it have to obtain it's
connection through the router? I'm confused????
Will I have to install any hardware into my current pc. (I KNOW HOW &
AND AM NOT AFRAID OF THAT TASK) My question is only, Will I need to?
Will my desktop pc have to be reconfigured to connect to the net? I'm
just confused and am not afraid to try anything. I've fixed people
computers, installed hardware, reformatted HD's, but never dealt with
wireless.
Basically all I am wanting is a laptop that I can use in my bedroom
and throughout the house with my current connection.
LAPTOP ASIDE- Once I get the router hooked up properly to my current
desktop connection. Will my desktop have a connection?
Then I need to worry about the connection to the laptop RIGHT? Since
wireless is gonna be built-in to the laptop. After I get everything
configured, Do I just turn it on, and it starts searching for the
wireless connection?
router through an ethernet cable. You may have to mess around with
the cable company if they have the modem locked to the mac address of
your current network adapter, so do this at a time when somebody at
tech support will be available. As far as why they stuck another
ethernet card in your desktop, it was because they were stupid or lazy
or both. I'd have made them pull it and use what was already there.
security which from what I read is the best next to WPA2. Most routers
that I find with good reviews only have WEP which from reading is the
worst of the 3. It seems this is important, but I want a good product.
I don't want to be worried with WEP, but if the product has good
reviews then how safe am i using WEP

Thanks. I wish I could ask all these questions at once. The more I
read though the more questions I have. Now I'm worried about Vista
being pre-installed on the laptop I am going to get.
I like XP so much, and I am sure with vista on it if I don't get the
right router I'm gonna be digging all over the net for drivers,
firmware and whatever else to get it up and running correctly.
I HOPE NOT
Will there be any issues with my desktop pc running xp and the laptop
running vista? I'd love to reformat the new laptop with vista, but I'm
sure it might void my warranty. I hope this goes smooth.
The router doesn't have drivers, just set it up via Ethernet, don't try to do it wirelessly. Use WPA with a 20 digit or greater pass phrase.
