Re: Please help me set up Linux/XP dual boot on this HP

Create two partitions (C: and D:), install Linux first on C: as if it was the only OS, then install XP on D:. XP's install will setup dual boot.

[I think that this will work, but if not you might need a 3rd party boot manager.]

For starters, get a larger hard drive.

I have a solid HP Pavilion zv3000 (3GHz P4, 1GB memory) with a 40GB hard drive.

My objective is to set up dual boot into Linux (which?) and XP.

Where can I find guidance on this?

Thanks!
I am not positive this will work, never tried it. From personal experience, I do know that installing Linux after XP will allow dual boot, from Linux.

The thing is, the OP mentions he wants to do this on an HP computer. I have read, unfortunately on a French site, that some machines, including HP, are sold "tattooed" which can create all sort of problems when tempering with the boot sector (which is exactly what Linux does when it installs.

I personally used System Commander to dual boot, and it works ... I did not say it was easy!

My best advice would be for the OP to carefully browse all sites he can find about the exact Linux version he wants to install. It took me several tries to finally get Ubuntu to work with my machine and during those tries, I ran into very unconfortable situations ... To make things worse, it looks like every distro (Linux lingo) has a slightly different way to install.

Again, best advice, visit newsgroups and sites who deal with you specific version before you try anything and assume the worst will happen!

Good luck
