Well, a "virtual desktop" gives you a true, pixel-for-pixel display on the LCD of a desktop larger than the LCD. You just have to scroll it to see it all. The "widescreen" LCDs are approximately the same aspect ratio as 1080p.

Yet, there will be no way to display a true 1080p image of the notebook's desktop since the video card is designed for something other than 1080p resolution. It will be another case of displaying in other than the cards default resolution, unless the TV can display one pixel for each one pixel supplied by the video card.
