I have two sets of hardware. I just used a $10 CompUSA IDE/HDD adaptor
(just an elaborate connector) that is
designed to bolt into a desktop, thus integrating the laptop's HDD into the
other
machine. See here

I am not aware of a IDE-USB connector not part of an enclosure.

provide valuable protection & allow the laptop's HDD to be carried in your
pocket safely. The enclosures allow very quick connections to a WinXP
machine, which should recognize the HDD without installing anything else. I
know nothing about Macs. Anyone who depends on their laptop should have one
of these AND a spare HDD ready to go when their laptop's HDD goes south, for
whatever reason. The spare HDD can be permanently stored in the USB
adapter/enclosure until needed, and key data files can easily be backed up
to this unit when it's connected to the laptop.

laptop's entire HDD, to be stored on other media, then to re-create a
working version of the OS when necessary, using a product like Norton Ghost.

site and they have a direct IDE to USB cable that seems designed just for
this.

Yes. What you suggest is a basic method of data retrieval from HDD's of
crashed laptops, something every laptop owner should get familiar with.
