Laptop boots to Blue screen of death

My son brought his laptop home from school loaded with viruses, apparently
his Norton subscription expired in December.
Now tries to boot, and goes straight to the blue screen of death with the
following.
"Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status
of 0xC00000034 (0x000000000 0x000000000)
Of course his Windows disk is sitting in his Dorm, 1000 miles away. But I
borrowed a disk form a neighbor, assuming the Repair feature would be
compatible.
What I would like to do is take his HD out of the laptop, hook it up in an
External HD case and try to recover his school work before reformatting the
drive.
My long winded question is, is there a chance that I can take the HD out of
the laptop and put it in a 2.5" external case and read the data via USB from
a desktop computer.
Does this sound like a reasonable approach?
Darrell
