That is a possible explanation.

A poster in another NG informed me that the problem I was having with.
my HD when it was on my laptop, but not my desktop, was caused by the
inability of the laptop's USB port to provide enough power for the
drive to operate properly. Seems reasonable, since it works perfectly
on my desktop, though I haven't tried adding more power to it by
connecting its extra power port to a second USB port, as he suggested.
I'll let you know how that goes, though.

I missed your comment about the clicking sound. This is very, very bad in most cases. I'd be hesitant to use that drive.
Also, 40 gig is still small by today's standards, and 30 to 40 gigs isn't all that much of an improvement. Might be a good time to look at a 60 or 80 GB drive, they are not too expensive.

This is fairly easy, although a bit time consuming.
Method 1:
Connect the 40 gig drive to the Thinkpad with a USB adapter. Reformat to clear the drive (actually not absolutely necessary), and partition to a single large partition (which it probably already is). Use an imaging software in it's "drive-to-drive" mode to copy the partition on the 30GB drive to the 40GB drive. To resize the 30GB partition to 40GB, either use an option within the imaging program (if there is one) or use Partition Magic or similar later, as a subsequent operation.
Method 2:
Remove the 30GB drive from the Thinkpad, and use imaging software to make and save an image of it when it's connected to the desktop. Disconnect the drive, and instead connect the 40GB drive, then use the imaging software to write the image (now saved on the desktop's hard drive) back to the 40GB drive. To resize the 30GB partition to 40GB, either use an option within the imaging program (if there is one) or use Partition Magic or similar later, as a subsequent operation.
"Imaging software" = one of (Acronis TrueImage, Symantec Ghost or PowerQuest Drive Image).

wouldn't boot, and I didn't have the data backed up. So I replaced
that HD with a 30 Gig HD I had, and reinstalled XP and my programs on
the 30.
I then attached the original 40 Gig to my desktop using a USB adapter,
So i now have access to the files on that drive thru my desktop.
Now, I'm thinking I'd like to, if possible, transfer Windows and
everthing on the 30 Gig HD back to the 40 Gig, and use the latter
again, because of the extra sapce. But I can't figure out what the
best way to do that is.
When I tried to attach the 40 Gig to my laptop's USB port, XP
installed the driver OK, but wouldn't recognize the drive, and the
drive made a strange clicking sound, which it doesn't make when it's
on my desktop.
Advice on the best way to go about getting my 40 GB drive back would
be appreciated. I could, of course, transfer the files on the 40 to my
desktop, reinstall XP on the 40, and then transfer the files back to
it. But i'm thinking there's gotta be an easier way that someone here
would know.
Thanks in advance for the advice.
