Laptop stops auto-hibernating after installing DSL

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 running windows 2000. For years, it has
been set to hibernate after 20 minutes of inactivity. Last night, I
installed a SpeedTouch 585(i) v6 "ADSL2+" Gateway (basically a
router/modem, I'm told). Now, the laptop no longer goes into
hibernation by itself. Googling shows that it may be related to game
applications or screen savers. I don't have any games and I'm using
the standard Windows screen saver. If you can suggest anything further
to check, I'd appreciate it.
