All advice most welcome.

You are not alone with this. I think this fault has been reported
several times. I also have a T4600, and I have purchased a second
bank, but not installed it yet partly because I am concerned whether I
will damage the sockets.

From what I read elsewhere on the web, the socket gets hot, and some
pins do not make contact. I get the impression it is some kind of
thermal ageing process - maybe the fibre in which the socket is
mounted becomes brittle or deforms very very slightly - but I am
guessing there.

I think some people have tried increasing the 'pressure' on the socket
by inserting some folded paper or very thin card - but it will be luck
if that works.

I really think it is hardware - nothing to do with XP. (You could
verify that anyway by inserting a CD based Linux (Knoppix, or Damn
Smal Lionux, say) and seeing how much ram Linux recognises.)

I'll post some links if I can find them again. Please post back if
you make any progress. The T4600 was a good, long-lasting machine -
it would be a great shame if this problem cannot be solved.

Ron,

Thanks for your suggestions. Summing up your reply, I find it encouraging afterall that my problem is not unique :-).

I have also tried a special contact spray (2-26) which is normally used to revive old, oxidized switches in radios and other electronic equipment. It removes oxide very effectively and keeps the contacts sort of "greased", but it did not help in this case. AMOF, it was the first and only time that this particular spray has let me down.

I am looking forward to studying any possible links you may find on this subject. Same here, apart from this socket problem, I am quite happy with my Tosh 4600 machine!

Best regards,
Kim
