Re: Sony SZ28

I agree that the keyboard thing is a matter of personal preference, so I'll
just state that as my personal opinion.

For the charger, the one of my previous Sony (Z1) is much smaller, and the
one of my other laptop (ACER) is much much smaller. But again, I can live
with that, though I do find stupid to make a bulky charger for a
light-weight laptop.

Might be that the sleep time is normal, but my previous Sony lasted several
days in sleep mode. Well, I can live with that too.

My big complain is the fan.

I cannot compare with other machines except the ones I had before (Sony Z1,
compaq, and God knows what else (had many but no Dell or HP)), and this one
beats them all flat down in terms of noise.

I don't know if it's a problem with this particular machine. I already wrote
support but have received no answer to date.

I measured the temperature using a software program.

Below 41C the fan does not work at all. After 41C it starts to work
relatively silently. Once it reaches around 43-44C, it becomes noisy to very
noisy.

Problem is that with the head generated by the processor, the temperature
turns around 45-46C in idle mode. Therefore, the fan never stops running at
high speed.

A solution for Sony would be to start the fan only at say around 47C,
because the processor won't get damaged before at least 55-60C.

However, I do not think they made any adaptation. They just plugged a fancy
2Ghz Dual Core, et voila.

As it is, the machine is a real annoyance to work with, and then, in such a
frame of mind, the bad keyboard (personal preference) is getting even more
earky.

I did read positive review of the SZ before, but none that was using a 2Ghz
Dual Core. This is the reason why I think the problem may be linked
specifically to that processor. It would be interesting to hear the feedback
of other 2Ghz SZ owners when it becomes more spread out.

I think you might have a problem with your machine. I have a Vaio
GRT270P, a 2.8 GHz P4, and the fan isn't that noisy. Not even at full
speed is the fan more noticable than any Dell or HP machine I have ever
heard.

I have tried out the S series keyboards on several machines and they
are excellent, this might be a personal preference.

The SZ series batteries are rated for 4 hours use, less with a
high-performance processor. I would not be surprised if the battery
failed after a day in sleep mode.

As far as the charger brick, the largest I have seen is my GRT, at 1.5
lbs and about the size of a house brick. The ones on the S series are
on average the same size as most other adapters I have seen.

Sounds to me like you might have a first release model or something. I
have done extensive research into the S and SZ series and even the
people I know who have them and use them don't complain about the
things you do. Maybe you need to take it back or call support about it?

This machine is very noisy. The fan is constantly running at a fairly
high
speed. I guess this is because the processor is a Dual Core 2Ghz that
gets
very hot, because what is reported on the internet otherwise (most
probably
with less powerful processors) is that the machine is fairly silent and
that
the fan barely runs at all.

Is there anything I can do about that?

I do not recommend this laptop because of this serious flaw. The sleep
mode
is also very short. Usually after one day only the battery runs flat.

It seems that Sony just put a higher processor in this machine and did
not
do any tuning to adapt the machine to the processor.

I am not speaking of the dreadful keyboard and of the fact that the
charger
is bulky like hell, defeating in that the excellent portability of this
machine on its own.

The most annoying of all, however, is the constant noise generated by the
fan, and I really wonder how I could remedy to that problem, if possible
at
all.
