I don't know if it's a problem with this particular machine. I already
wrote support but have received no answer to date.

I measured the temperature using a software program.

Below 41C the fan does not work at all. After 41C it starts to work
relatively silently. Once it reaches around 43-44C, it becomes noisy to
very noisy.

Problem is that with the head generated by the processor, the temperature
turns around 45-46C in idle mode. Therefore, the fan never stops running
at high speed.

A solution for Sony would be to start the fan only at say around 47C,
because the processor won't get damaged before at least 55-60C.

However, I do not think they made any adaptation. They just plugged a
fancy 2Ghz Dual Core, et voila.

As it is, the machine is a real annoyance to work with, and then, in such
a frame of mind, the bad keyboard (personal preference) is getting even
more earky.

I did read positive review of the SZ before, but none that was using a
2Ghz Dual Core. This is the reason why I think the problem may be linked
specifically to that processor. It would be interesting to hear the
feedback of other 2Ghz SZ owners when it becomes more spread out.

I think you might have a problem with your machine. I have a Vaio
GRT270P, a 2.8 GHz P4, and the fan isn't that noisy. Not even at full
speed is the fan more noticable than any Dell or HP machine I have ever
heard.

I have tried out the S series keyboards on several machines and they
are excellent, this might be a personal preference.

The SZ series batteries are rated for 4 hours use, less with a
high-performance processor. I would not be surprised if the battery
failed after a day in sleep mode.

As far as the charger brick, the largest I have seen is my GRT, at 1.5
lbs and about the size of a house brick. The ones on the S series are
on average the same size as most other adapters I have seen.

Sounds to me like you might have a first release model or something. I
have done extensive research into the S and SZ series and even the
people I know who have them and use them don't complain about the
things you do. Maybe you need to take it back or call support about it?

I do not recommend this laptop because of this serious flaw. The sleep

Sony has generally (always?) supplied their proprietary power management
applet PowerPanel that must be running in order to effect CPU
speed/voltage management. Many versions of PowerPanel have Performance
mode and Quiet mode when using AC power. Quiet mode is moderate
throttling of the CPU speed/voltage.

Indeed mine as this feature too. It even as an additional button to slow
down CPU and thus fan noise. However, neither the quiet option nor this
button makes any difference. I tried everything already.
