seeking help in finding detailed, specific info. for the internal
modems of specific models.
Oh, sure, but since I don't have any information on those specific
laptops, I thought I'd chime in anyway. That's the Usenet Way, right?
8*)
Right-click on the device in Device Manager and click <Uninstall>.
I had already tried this myself and saw right away that it was
useless; it is just as easy to reinstall.
(Does this prove that the drivers I tried this for were, in fact, part
of Windows?
Also use add/remove programs in Control Panel to remove any software
that comes with the modem.
Would this be different from the above, namely, once the software was
removed it could not be reloaded except from an _external_ source?
(such as online or CD)
You'll still need to uninstall the drivers using add/remove programs.
That's the step that will make "reinstall" no longer function.
the whole thing probably sounds quite bizarre and hard to imagine but
if I were to explain and tell the whole story you would see how it all
fits in and makes perfect sense.
(But it's somewhat personal, not necessary for the info. I need and
beyond the scope of this forum)
You're right, it sounds bizarre. From over here it sounds like a
self-control thing, which is as easy to deal with as "don't turn the
silly machine on if you are having addiction problems with it", and as
easy to circumvent as keeping the drivers around, or buying a PCMCIA
modem card when you can't stand it any more.
You're right, though, we probably don't need or want to know the gory
details, but I've seen too many of examples of "I want do do something
incomprehensible for reasons I'll keep to myself" turn out to have
solutions on the order of "Well, XYZ company will take your laptop
apart, color the housing, and put it back together for you, and you'll
have the custom color computer you want."
