Re: AC Adaptor specs for GQ laptop?

Thanks, Barry. I have since discovered it's 19V center positive (as
usual) and as it happens I have an old adaptor from a Sony laptop that
should work (actually 19.5V, which should be close enough since I
assume onboard voltage regulators will handle the slight overage
without difficulty).

I ordered a plug and jack from Jameco that should work (I will have to
replace the plug from the adaptor too) so I should have what I need.
Now I just have to hope for a successful operation (and getting
everything back together properly).

I agree with your rules, although the GQ is (was?) generally a good
machine. I always knew the warranties were a ripoff, but I thought the
exception was portable devices that might take a beating. Now I know
that they are 100% a ripoff since the warranty doesn't cover anything
you might actually need it for.

Thanks for taking the time to reply on this!

I'd be more specific and say generally, limit your consideration to
Toshiba, Lenovo and Dell, although Acer, HP, Compaq, Sony and a few
others qualify as "1st tier" vendors)

Rule 2: Only buy extended warranties directly from the manufacturer.

Rule 3: Only buy extended warranties that cover accidental physical damage

Was the power jack a simple coaxial jack? If so, you should be able to
figure out the type from the pieces (even if it's broken).

The ratings are usually printed or embossed on the laptop somewhere.

The center pin on coaxial jacks is nearly always positive.

There is one of these on E-Bay right now (#300012198003), you could
write the seller and ask him the voltage of the power adapter. Or, for
$50, the power adapter and jack may be worth it (the laptop itself is
non-functional, although apparently complete).

I hope someone who has a GQ Laptop (from Fry's Electronics) can help me
out here. My daughter's GQ ZX5531 (model "GREEN553") has a broken power
jack, AND she lost the AC adaptor for it. I am going to replace the
power jack and get another AC adaptor, but I have no idea on the
voltage and polarity specs required.

Could someone with a GQ laptop please tell me the voltage and polarity
printed on the AC adapter? I guess it's probably 19V with +ve in the
center, but I'd like to be sure before I plug something into it!

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. The extended warranty from Fry's is a rip-off in more ways than
one. I never buy the extended warranties but in this case I thought a
laptop for a college student is a good applicaiton for the warranty
since the machines are toted from class to class to home to car, etc.
But Fry's refused to honor the warranty, saying the damage was due to
abuse! I will never buy a laptop from them again.
