Audio adapter enquiry

I'm wanting to get an audio adapter for a Toshiba laptop.
Either USB connecting or PCMCIA or firewire, whatever is available and best.
I find it hard to research this area. Little is in the stores and the
Creative
website isn't very clear on specifics.
I want the ability to have digital audio out, similar to what almost any DVD
player
has, to connect to a DD5.1, DTS5.1 decoder. I also want analog stereo line
input for recording from analog sources like a vinyl record player and other
things of that ilk.
Also a headphone plug with volume control would be good.
Anything sufficient for this and not necessarily top of the range would suit
but not cheapest.
There is no SPDIF out available at present and the inbuilt audio adapter has
no SPDIF capability, so I am assuming an external audio adapter could solve
that.
