It's a critical point whether the display is present or not, without regard to whether it's lit up (and, unlit, it will be almost impossible to see). But if it's present, then the problem is stricly a backlight issue, which sounds like the case. Otherwise, it could be the video section or the LCD display panel itself.

It should work with an external monitor with no real problems, but you will have to switch to the external monitor (usually Fn key + some other key that varies by laptop model). In some cases there may also be settings in the driver.
