All of the cooling of a laptop is in the base and is through the sides/bottom. So from a cooling perspective, the laptop doesn't care if it's open or closed.
Obviously, you cannot use the internal keyboard or screen with the laptop closed, but you can, of course, use external components.
The normal shutdown of the laptop when closed is only to conserve batteries and screen life. With an external keyboard/display, you CAN use the laptop while closed.

My Dell Latitude D600 has a dock/monitor-stand that requires you to.
CLOSE the laptop and keep it closed in order to dock it and run it like
that. Now, how in the world is it possible for me to use this thing
(especially for CPU-intensive stuff) without it frying? I was under
the impression that laptops were not made to run screen-closed - that's
part of why they go into "sleep" usually when you do this. The dock
doesn't seem to offer any special cooling other than propping up the
back of the laptop while it's sitting in there. Otherwise, there are
no extra fans, etc.
Just curious...
