It's possible to buy a great laptop in the US for about $600 to $700 if you are patient and selective. But you may have to wait up to 90 days or so for the right deal to appear. You are apparently in the UK, and I have no idea what kind of deals you can get over there, but £1100 would seem like enough to easily get something decent.
[What I got for what ended up being about $500 was a Toshiba A105-S2712, a 1.73GHz Pentium M Centrino system with 512 megs, 60 gig drive, widescreen "truebrite" display and DVD burner. But it was a comple deal, $1130 or so "out the door" with 9 rebates and a bunch of significant stuff included in the deal, "free after rebates" (multi-function printer, D-Link networking setup, case, etc.). I sold all the extra stuff on E-Bay and I've actually received almost all of the rebates, including one for $200 and a couple for nearly $100 each. It took some shopping and some luck, and a lot of work on the rebates.]

I want to buy a new laptop and I am totally and utterly bewildered. I.
have been on almost every website imaginable and all the information is
confusing me. I know next to nothing about all this technical stuff!
Here is what I need: a laptop with a powerful, fast processor for
multimedia, gaming and everyday tasks and watching dvds. I doesn't
need to be lighter than say 3.5kg but would be good. I would also like
a large(ish) screen (15-17"). I really don't want to spend over £1000
but could go up to £1100 if necessary. Is this possible?
Can anyone out there help me with this?
Thanks.
