Re: Laptop motherboard

In general, you cannot replace the motherboard. However, you ***MAY*** be able to replace the CPU. Some are socketed, and many laptops from this timeframe used Intel CPU "modules" (which were also socketed and could sometimes be changed). This is fraught with potential problems (hardware, BIOS, etc.) but you can sometimes do it. However, it is very rarely worth it.

Too much time on my hands. Have Compaq 7710 laptop. Would like to try grafting a new motherboard into it that would support a PIII-500 processor or so and use the existing LCD screen, keyboard, hard drives etc. Can anyone point me to a source for good used or new motherboards? Also is there a web site that may shed light on this endeavor?

Thanks
