That model has 32 megs on the motherboard, and one additional socket (it takes an EDO SO-DIMM). You can't do anything about the onboard memory, so while memory is a valid concern, the test here is just to remove the memory from the memory socket and use only the onboard memory.
However, I am very, very, very familiar with that model (I have a stack of 7 of them right here in this room), I've serviced dozens of them, and the symptoms suggest the hard drive as the 1st and most likely cause of the problem (but not the only cause, and memory would be my very next suspect).

Had a recent Toshiba that worked the same way; thought for sure it was the bios or the hard drive. Found out that one of the sticks, despite passing "tests" seemed to cause a hang. When the bad stick was removed, the machine worked just fine. Just a thought. dr
