Almost any "external [USB] sound card" with line-in should work, but for use with a laptop I'd want something "small". There are quite a few of these, including models by creative labs (Soundblaster), but there are some that are both smaller and cheaper (and not necessarily inferior, especially for your purposes (voice does not require "hi-fi" 48-bit recording).

Thank you. The next model up from the IC recorder that I have provides for file transfer via a USB cable. I never anticipated this need. At CompUSA (a store I really dislike) I found a gadget similar to the one posted by Richard Johnson earlier (accepts all kinds of plugs). It is very large, with a massive USB cable. I might buy it if I had some assurance that it would actually work. I may try loading the file onto my desktop, whose CD burner is unreliable. But then I can probably get it over the network to one of our laptops..
