Re: battery vs AC power

No, the DC power jack is the actual physical connector (hole in the back of the laptop) that the plug on the end of the AC adapter cord goes into. These fail often. In some cases, they are directly on the motherboard (and the failure mode may involve direct damage to the motherboard), in other cases they are a stand alone part that connects to the motherboard with a short 2" - 3" "pigtail" 2-wire cable. It's often possible to repair these failures by resoldering, but it requires total disassembly and removal of the motherboard from the laptop. Of course, we don't even know for certain that the DC jack is the problem.

[It needs to be seen by a good laptop service technician]

Thank you Barry,
So dumb question of the day is, what exactly is the DC power jack?
Figure 8 power cord?

I guess just take it to authorized dealer for diagnosis & repair?

DC Jack, Motherboard (or power supply if it's not on the motherboard)
and AC adapter itself are possible causes (bad cable, also .... both the
"figure 8" power cord and the cable from the AC adapter). The inverter
board, as the term is usually meant when applied to laptops, is not a
possible cause. The DC power jack is the single most likely cause.

my laptop keeps "switching" to battery power even though the AC power
cord is securely attached to the computer. I then just simply unattach
then reinsert the cord and it will work for hours (or sometimes switch
right back to battery). Quite random.
I've heard everything from the DC jack, to the motherboard or the power
inverter board, or the AC adaptor (I don't think it is this since
reattaching it, can work).

Suggestions? Thoughts?
