I suspect that the drive, not the media, is bad. DVD-R is a pretty stable format. You could also try burning at a lower speed. The disks that I have been most satisfied with, much to my amazement, have been "K-Hypermedia", a private label brand sold by OfficeMax (and infrequently by other retailers as well), but Verbatim is a top brand and should work (I use Verbatim exclusively for my dual-layer burning). TDK should also be fine. Could also be a software issue. The burning software that comes with most computers (laptop or desktop) is junk, because the mfgrs don't want to pay the price for the good software. I always uninstall all of the burning software and then install full-retail full-version Roxio or Nero (or, quite often, both).

My notebook has a dual layer DVD burner. Help files suggest some brands of blank DVDs but they are not readily available. I have used TDK DVD-RW's and they work well but it is the DVD-R's I have trouble with. I just wasted another 2 DVD-R (Verbatim) 4.7GB discs trying to get it to work..
