Vaio ReWrite Problem

My Sony Vaio laptop PCG-FXA36 has stopped being able to write to CD/DVD. It works for reading CD's and software, but when I put a
blank CDR in, it just clicks and runs for a second or two, and I get a message that says "disk not inserted in drive". Thinking
maybe it was a driver problem, I downloaded the original and an update, but then get an error message that says "The target software
suitable for updating is not installed". Does this sound like a software problem I can fix, or is it time send it to repair? Thanks
for any help.
