You have more memory, but in some machines this will kill the dual-channel memory mode, cutting the effective speed of the memory system in half.
What's more important, memory size or memory speed? It depends. But I'd guess that for most users, 512 megs in dual channel mode will be faster then 768 megs in single channel mode.
Note1: Not all systems support dual channel mode, no matter what you do. In a system that only has single channel memory anyway, obviously you go for more memory, since mixing a 256 and a 512 meg module doesn't slow anything down.
Note2: There certainly are situations in which 768 megs of single channel memory will outperform 512 of dual channel memory. This is user and application software dependent.

Yep, the "key" in the socket is in a different location. You cannot plug the wrong one in. Well, unless you use a big hammer. :-)
DDR and DDR2 are not "single and dual channel" memory. They are totally different types of memory ... as different as SDRAM and DDR. Not only can you not mix them, but as far as I know, a machine made for one (either one) won't take the other, at all, period.
What ever you people are thinking....I don't know if you really applied those ideas of yours but I understand DDR and DDR2 are incompatible. But ..I really replaced one of the 256 MB with one 512Mb making the total memory to to768 MB and my applications where larger memoryworks better...
