I looked that those links, but nothing really came close to talking about
what's going on with my computer. I did several different (too bad you have
to search them this way) searches of Dell's online forums (I did say this is
a Dell notebook, didn't I?), and finally saw several other posts describing
this behavior:

Password-protect the BIOS ---> Automatically go into Standby ---> Machine
prompts for BIOS password before going from Standby to Hibernate.

Note, I can go directly into Hibernate automatically just fine. But
something's "getting in the way" when the machine halfway wakes up from
Standby to make the transition to Hibernate. It's obviously a known issue
with Dell's BIOS, as evidenced by the number of posts I saw. Dell either
said "we're working on it" or (get this) "this is intended"!!

The real bummer is that my computer used to do this correctly up until a few
days ago!! It was after I uninstalled Dell's QuickSet utility (after a Dell
tech said it was OK to do so) that I noticed the computer would no longer go
into Hibernate without prompting for the password...or in other words, would
fail to go into Hibernate unattended. I have since reinstalled QuickSet, but
it hasn't fixed it. Could QuickSet have messed with Windows power management
files, or is the issue above more at the BIOS level?

Anyway, thanks for the ideas. Keep 'em coming.
