Re: Very slow boot up sequence on older Toshiba Satelklite 2410. Why?

No, Toshiba usually displays nothing, and it's not any key that you press, but rather the fact that a key is held down and not released (which looks like a "fault" to the bios), but invariably it is the Esc key that is recommended.

I do, however, agree with your suggestion for a clean install. That's a good idea whenever a machine changes hands, it insures a "clean start". You never know what virus' and spyware the preivous owner had encountered, or how screwed up the registry might be.

Watch the screen carefully and intently as the machine boots up. The key to press for access to the BIOS will be shown there. It will usually be the Delete key, F8 or F10, but could be some other key. I would consider a fresh, clean install of XP on the machine.

Many things can cause a slow boot up. Worms, viruses and spyware or adware infestations are the most common. Of course, a clean install of Windows would solve those problems.

I recently purchased (for my mom) a used Satellite 2410. Before
sending it to her, I uninstalled some programs she won't need and
installed new ones (McAfee, Spybot, Diskkeeper, Adsubtract, etc.).
When I first got the laptop, it would boot normally (30 - 40 seconds to
get to desktop) but now it takes 5minutes + to boot to the desktop.
Once there however, it seems to work at normal speed. Of course, I
don't remember exactly at what point, it started doing that so I cannot
associate it with a specific event.

When I bought the laptop, the seller and I quickly looked at the BIOS
but I don't remember us changing anything and, anyway, I think the
problem started a few days after that. Now I can't even get in the
BIOS because I don't know what key (or key combo) he used to get in
there - and no manual).

Any obvious culprits that would cause the boot process to drag? Any
tests or procedures I should try to correct this problem? Right now, I
am considering removing, one by one, the programs that I installed to
see if I can reach a point where the laptop boots up normally. I also
deleted some Toshiba utilities which I tought were useless: I hope
none of them were important. I may download them from Toshiba WEB site
and re-install them just in case.

Other ideas, suggestions or comments would be most welcome as I am
hoping to fix and ship this in the next day or two so that it gets
there before Xmas! Cheers! Andre
