Although USB hubs come with power adapters, for a keyboard and mouse they normally are not required.
Microsoft does make a very nice wireless optical notebook mouse. Yes, you need batteries, but the battery (one AAA) lasts 60 to 90 days, and the receiver stores inside the mouse (and this physically disconnects the battery entirely to further lengthen it's life).

Hello all,
I bought my girlfriend a laptop last Xmas and I need to get her setup properly. She would rather have a normal style keyboard hooked to her laptop when at home. I also want to get her a mouse. Not sure which route to take. She does NOT want wireless stuff as she does not want to have to worry about batteries. I figured USB is the way to go. They have a combo USB keyboard/mouse at bestbuy for $30. I believe her laptop(a toshiba) has 3 usb ports, one on the side and two in back. I was also thinking of getting her a cheap 4 port usb hub(so she could plug all this stuff conviently into the hub), but after looking I see that they come with power adapters. Doesn't seem like much sense to get the hub if she needs to plug it in. I originally bought her a wireless mini mouse and keypad only combo(by Targus)but I broke the mouse trying to change batteries(lol)and the keypad is smaller than a normal keyboard keypad, and she just can't work as fast with it. The laptop stays *mostly* at home. The keyboard would stay home but I think she would want to take the mouse with her. Whaddya think??
