RE:NEC Versa SX wont power up...HELP!!

I was thinking maybe the mobo, are laptops like desktop's were if you dont have a working harddrive you will still get a boot screen?
I added a 20 gig HD i had and maybe that went bad, i'll try my old drive tonight,while i got it all aprt i should check the mobo for any cracks or burns
