Laptop Estimate

I'm taking bids/advice for the following problem. I have some bids
already and so far I have the following set in stone: either local to
the Overland Park, KS area or, for online stores, free two-way
shipping.

OK, so here's my laptop problem...

While the laptop is plugged in, the battery icon, signifying that it
is now running on battery, will appear. When you take the cable out
and put it back in it will start to charge for a randomy amount of
time. Times vary from a half a second to hours, though usually closer
to the half a second requiring me to keep my hand on the powercord and
do a constant repition of unplug/plugin while I attempt to safely
finish what I was doing (i.e. an install, a download, etc...) Ergo I
cannot charge my laptop while it's running. I have to go into standby
every hour and a half to let it charge up.

When the laptop is in standby mode or off, the laptop will charge
fine. However, when the laptop is on with the battery icon showing
(it kicked into battery mode) and I put it into stand by it does NOT
automatically start charging. I have to unplug and plug it in. Then
it will stay powered via the cord until I come out of standby at which
time it will usually go directly into battery mode.

The other night I went to sleep and the laptop was running fine and ON
power. I woke up at 3am to see it in safemode because the power got
so low. Then I woke up at 7am with a fully powered battery because it
finally shut off and then started to charge back up.

It seems like the mechanism that the battery power and power cord
power flow to is the problem. This mechanism probably needs replacing.

There is a very noticable crack (to put it lightly) by the powercord
which is surely the issue. About four months ago I dropped the laptop
and it worked fine until a few weeks ago when it started this
nightmare.

Alsom this problem is intermittent, but there isn't a day where I
don't wan to throw it across the room.

You should have enough information at this point.

Parts info? Compaq R3240US.

So, any company bids? Advice?
