Re: USB external drives - power reqs

I have never seen a PC Card USB adapter that did not have the connector for an external power supply (don't get me wrong, many of them do not come with the supply, but all that I've seen do have the connector for it). Are you sure that you don't have the connector? If you do have the connector, there are 3 sources of power potentially available: Another USB port (for example, a USB 1.x port on the laptop when using a PC Card to get USB 2.0 support), a PS/2 power takeoff, or an external AC power supply (wall wart).

Unfortunately, the PC Card slot does not supply +5 volts (or so I'm
told) so cannot supply external hard drives. Some of these USB 2.0
cards have an external power connector where you can add power to the
USB 2.0 card so it can supply power to external devices. My USB 2.0
PC Card has no such power connector, but I've found it can supply card
readers and USB mice but I've never tried an unpowered external hard
drive. All the external drives I use are self-powered with external
supplies.
