Standby saves the current state of the machine to memory, with a laptop this
can present a problem as power is used to keep the memory active, else you
would loose that saved state.
Hibernate write the current state of the machine to the disk.
Shutdown, shuts down the machine.
Keep in mind that it is possible to loose some functionality when using
either standby or hibernate, depending on the machine. If I use standby on
my desktop several times in a row I will loose the sound. Try it out and
you may be lucky enough that either mode will work just fine.
