I think you should be OK having two different sized DIMMs in your
laptop as long as the speeds match up. If your new DIMM still isn't
cutting it, perhaps you need to get exactly the same RAM that you have
fixed in there. Crucial.com can probably tell you that or the HP
specs can.

I would get Memtest and boot that outside of Windows to test your
memory. That should tell you fairly quickly whether your memory as
install is really any good or if you have some other problem.

You can boot Memtest from a floppy too - poke around the web to get it.
