OK, google'ing this info has turned up some postings elsewhere that seem to confirm the below, and also describe my WinXP installation problem, that my non-supported NEC FDD is not seen when the WinXP SetUp process returns to it the second time.
So, since there are part numbers mentioned for two of the supported models (a Sony and a TEAC model), I just went after these on eBay. I found the IBM (TEAC) FRU 05K9283 unit most common, and ordered a new one for about $21 total.
I sure wish Intel would have posted this MS WinXP-install FDD support info in their SATA/RAID system-integration doc.

After my "RAID Setup and DP35DP?" tale of woe just now posted, I found http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/916196/ .
This MS KB article documents which USB FDD's are supported for use during an WinXP installation, at least as of Mar2006. My NEC model is not, perhaps there is my problem.
