Re: Any OSX86 users here?

* The New Guy:

The OS is the only one in the world that is virus/adware/trojan/worm free, very stable and user friendly. Its a unique product.

Well, no. MacOS X does have a shitload of security issues and glitches, and Apple is not the one that does an open discussion of problems or that fixes them fast. And stability is also often *very* questionable, Apple often introduces new stability and compatibility issues with new MacOS X sub-revisions. It's funny when the latest Apple updates bring you some kernel panics after the necessary reboot...

In terms of reliability MacOS X is not better than Windowsxp on good brandname hardware, often enough it's even worse. It's probably the least reliable UNIX-like OS I know (and I know a lot of UNIXes).

What's true is that MacOS is very user friendly. But honestly, Vista is very user friendly, too.

Any monkey can build a computer.

Yes, but if you look around you see the results. Just because someone can put together a few generic PC parts doesn't make him an expert or gives him knowledge. Most self-builders just don't know how a computer really works or why i.e. an Athlon64 doesn't have an FSB (or what an FSB really is). The result is a mass of unstable systems and owners that blindly blame Windows for every problem they have...

Apple likes to make a very pretty, all-in-one package. That appeals to impulse buyers. Thinking people see through the sham. 5% market share........

IIRC the market share has raised to somehwere around 7% now.

I talk computer hardware every day for both PC and Mac users and I can tell you, Mac users as a group are about the most ignorant group of computer users one could ever imagine. I've met people that are afraid of taking the side off their computer for fear of electrocution. Its unbelievable the questions I hear. Some are knowledgeable. Most are blissfully ignorant.

This group of people exists in all worlds, it's not a Mac-specific problem.

Which is fine - you don't buy a computer to tear apart. You buy a computer as a tool to get stuff one and enjoy.

Exactly. Sadly people tend to forget that...

Benjamin is typical of a gung-ho Apple worshipper. This mentality is great for sales. They have 100% confidence in everything Apple. Steve Jobs has attained close to cult like status in their minds. These people make very good customers. Their loyalty is unquestioned.

Well, no. You should better just stick your amateur psychology. I do have several Macs but all my work is done on Windows workstations. I don't *believe* in Apple or think everything they make is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Apple makes nice products which often incorporate a bunch of glitches. The support is just horrible (security by obscurity, ignoring evident hardware problems as long as possible, censorship of postings that discuss these problems in the Apple forum and all that). 1 year warranty for their expensive Mac Pro is just laughable, in this category 3 years on-site (which can't be had from Apple) is standard. Guess why you don't find Apple in corporate IT.

But making business decisions for Apple is not my business. Apple makes some nice renevue the way they are doing what they do, so they can't be completely wrong (at least on the economics side). What Apple (or any other company) definitely doesn't need is wannabe-specialists that have no f****ing clue about the business but live in misbelieve that they are competent to tell Apple (or any other company) what to do...

OSX86 will probably make it to the mainstream, whether soon or later, its going to happen. With or without Apple's permission.

It never will be "mainstream". Not because it's just illegal but simply because most of the OSX86 fanboys just ignore the fact that the biggest part why MacOS X works quite well is that it runs on proprietary hardware. One must be plain stupid to believe that running MacOS X on an average PC will lead to the same results.

When 10.5 comes out in a few weeks, many people will look with interest to see if it can be cracked by the x86 hackers.

Of course it will, there are enough idiots that think they can ignore copyright laws. Warez pricks never will die out...

If it can, its open season for another 2 or more years. IF it can't, the OSX86 movement will die a quick death as their future is doomed. In fact, all Apple has to do to boost hardware sales is to make it crack proof. We'll see. Unless they are planning to release it mainstream and are using the OSX86 movement as a sort of beta testing tool. That would be pretty smart.

It just would be silly. Betatesting on shitloads of crap PC hardware doesn't help anything to make MacOS X run better on Apple hardware...
