Bah ...it seems that the only way is to reinstall AIX ... I need some
hints:
1) The prompt was green on "pure" black: is it correct or there's
something wrong ?
it's ok, green text with black background is the standard color scheme
for a text console on aix.
2) do you know if I can remove the HD and mount the fs on Linux ? I gave
a quick google search but no sure answer (Linux supports jfs, but I
can't find a precise answer). If I can mount it, it's possible to crack
the password ?
the jfs filesystem supported in linux is a different beast than that used
on aix 3.x, apart from that linux doesn't even support the aix style
partition table.
what you can do is searching on the raw disk for the right string with
the root password, what you want is in /etc/security/passwd and is
something like this:
root:
password = qLcOLftQUEQt.
lastupdate = 8388
flags =
the password is standard des format, you can use john the ripper to crack
it, use a fast system and hope that the root password is very simple.
(for the curious, the password above is "luther")
another option is to locate the "password =" string on the disk and
replace it with the hash of a known password, or edit /etc/passwd file
and remove the "!" from the root string, an example, you will find
something like root:!:0:0::/:/bin/ksh , if you change this in
root::0:0::/:/bin/ksh the system will not ask any password
you can dump the disk, edit the image, and restore it on the disk, or
edit directly using something like norton diskeditor (from dos)
(years ago with diskeditor i performed this trick on some system, notably
an old Olivetti Unix, with success)
4) where can I find a copy of AIX 3 ? Should I mount an external SCSI CD
drive or it's all done by floppies ?
i can provide you with the image (made with tapecopy utils from tapeutils
package,http://www.brouhaha.com/~eric/software/tapeutils/) of the six
aix 3.2.5 installation set plus six image of the aix 3.2.5 maintenace
set, you need to restore it on tape and feed it to the system using a
supported tape drive, not the best way to install but usable.
someone here probably have a single tape copy of aix 3.2.5, much better,
or the rare cd copy of aix 3.2.5, never seen one (and i will be very
happy to obtain a copy)
mail me if you wan't more detail or if something is not clear (maybe in
italian i can explain better)

I will try the two method above: boot with maintenance floppies and
search the disk ... somewhere I should have an external tape drive
and, if I remember well, some AIX tapes ... may be 3.2.5 ... but tapes
are for me odd beasts ...
