You have a point in that it is a fully functional 286 right now. In other
words, it won't run Linux Mint.
I don't really understand how a DVD burner would fit in there sideways.
Wouldn't you try to put a DVD in there, and it would just fall out before
you could get the door closed?
The only way I am going to be able to keep this thing is if I somehow turn
it into the computer I use for my writing. I do freelance writing, and it
would be good to have a very stable system for that. However, I'm thinking
that it is unlikely that I could find an easy to use program that would run
on DOS. Plus, with the hard drive being more than 20 years old, I simply
wouldn't trust my data to it.
My wife wants it gone. I was excited to get "Behemoth" back and get to
look it over again. My wife wasn't. She sees it as another potential
unfinished project sitting around. We argued more than 10 minutes over it,
and we really don't need any more stress in our marriage at this point.
Why "butcher" an old PC ?
Well, there is actually enough space in there that I might not NEED to
butcher it. I could simply mount the motherboard inside, and then run the
relevant cables out the back. Or, I could run cable extensions, and build
my own back plate to plug things into, with things spaced as I like.
Just to retain the original case ?
Well, to keep it out of a landfill, for one. And yes, I like how it
looks. I'm not certain how having only a hard off switch would affect a
modern motherboard, though. This does not have soft off switch like most
ATX cases. Would that be a problem? I would really like to run this thing
without a hard drive - some sort of flash drive only deal, or something like
that.
Obviously, mine is a collector's point of view .
I'm not a collector, though I do like to repurpose old technology, and I
do like things that last a long time. I have a 1969 Ford Econoline van, for
example, and it runs and drives just fine. I also like the fact that this
PC weighs as much as my son, and it has a great handle on top.
What options are available if I were to leave it as is?
.
