Re: Server 500 and 720 acquisition questions...

Hi!

So, i'm wondering if i could ever get my hands on a server 500
or 720, and i have a few questions...

They are certainly around.

1. How much does a typically equipped 500/720 weigh?

With twelve disks and (if memory serves) two power supplies installed,
mine tipped the scales at 230 or so pounds.

3. In the event that i have to move it, how hard would it be to get
it down a flight of stairs that goes down 5 steps, has a landing,
turns and goes down 6-8 more steps?

It could be...interesting. Three times I have taken mine up and down a
longer flight of stairs with a similar turn and while I could
definitely do it (with disks and power supplies in place) I would not
have wanted to make a habit of doing so.

4. What are average odds of finding a 500 at a swap meet/on
eBay?

Probably better for eBay than a swap meet, but you never know. That's
part of the fun. PS/2s and related items aren't showing up as often,
my latest find at a hamfest was a 9585-0XF. I think that was in 2007.
I haven't seen anything "interesting" since that time. eBay is another
story. Stuff still shows up there now and again.

5. and finally, in the rare event that i do find one on eBay, how
much of a nightmare would the shipping be?

It depends upon how heavy your find is. Neither of my PC Server 500
systems were that heavy when I got them. One was fairly empty and cost
about $50 to ship via UPS. The other was much more fully loaded and
cost more (how much I don't recall).

Sorry if i bother anyone with how i'm posting...I'm just trying to
cram as much MCA-related knowledge into my head as far as
possible, and the best way to learn anything is to ask questions.

No bother, that's what the group is for. It's always good to see
someone who is newly interested in this stuff.
