Re: Server 500 Locked Bios

Hi!

There seems to be a lot of files Windows98SE  wants as it is
being set up to get it to work with SERVER500 but after its
initial load and first reboot it cannot get back to the Windows
cd in the Plextor.

I thought of setting up D: drive and copying the W98SE disk to it.
I just keep getting heaps of errors using copy or xcopy. This is well
documented on the web as impossible because of long file names.

The Windows 98/98SE CD has a "win98" folder, and that is the only
thing you need to copy in its entirety. You don't need the subfolders
as most of them pertain to the "on line services" Microsoft included
to dodge anti-trust issues. It contains no long file names.

I find what usually works well for me when I want to do this is the
following:

1. Use a boot disk to partition and format the hard drive.
2. Make the hard drive bootable (sys C: or format C: /S)
3. Copy CONFIG.SYS drivers needed to support the CD-ROM drive and
MSCDEX.EXE. You will also need an AUTOEXEC.BAT file to load
MSCDEX.EXE. Don't forget any other drivers you might need here.
4. Copy the entirety of the "win98" folder to a folder on your hard
drive, e.g.: copy D:\win98\*.* C:\win98
5. Restart the computer and let it come up from the hard disk. Make
sure all the appropriate device drivers load.
6. Run Windows 98 setup from the hard disk.

I have my doubts that the long file names on the Win98 CD will stop
any DOS utility from copying them. The Win98 CD is just an ISO9660/
Joliet formatted disc. If anything, the long file names are reduced to
short ones by utilities that don't understand LFNs.
